Clean Water Drilling in Nkareta, Kenya

Not far from the Maasai Mara in Kenya, is the Nkareta village. The people there are kind and welcoming; they work the land the best they can, but have no clean water to drink or cook with. The women and girls travel for hours each day just to fetch water from a dirty stream or watering hole. In March 2019, Change Your Stars met with the Masai tribe elders in the village. We spent time with the women and children, walking in the fields, eating and learning.

Change Your Stars wanted to improve life in the village with clean water. To do so, a well would need to be drilled and built. The first drilling attempt with a hand powered drill fell short of the necessary depth to reach water. Only a large, truck mounted drilling rig could finish the borehole. Change Your Stars hired a local drilling company to complete the well, bringing fresh water to nearly 1,000 people. Accessibility to clean water in remote villages improves infant mortality rates, sanitation and overall community health.
